Before I get into the more detailed stuff, I just want to say that a digg veteran is a client that has been on the Digg homepage over 40 times (4 in the last month), in my opinion anyway, which is a pretty impressive stat but it also means it’s difficult to show some large […]
Wondermill http://www.wondermill.com/ has been around since 1998, making easy-to-use web software (no outside client work). Our latest project is http://www.ask500people.com/
We work together remotely, getting together at least once a year for the SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin. (Wondermill covers most of the cost). Our work culture is open and friendly, we value work-life balance and we’re looking for two vastly talented developers to join our merry little band.
Who are you?
Assumed: You’re smart, learn new things quickly, write clean code, yada yada.
The extra mile: You’re a go-getter who takes initiative and gets things done. People can count on you. You’re always surprising everyone else by saying things like “Ok, that’s done. What else can I do?” You’re set up to work from home, and you like working there.
On the technical side, we’re looking for hackers in the old sense of the word. People who love to solve puzzles and learn new things. We don’t care if you’ve gone to school or you taught yourself everything you know. We’re looking for people who LOVE to code and really know their stuff.
You have several programming projects under your belt that you can point us to.

* Good understanding of the Application Service Provider development model.
* Comfortable developing full-featured web applications with PHP, MySQL and JavaScript.
* Bonus Points for MVC experience with PHP
* Ability to analyze time efficiency of code and optimize it.

The Vancouver Facebook Developers Garage was a hit. The hall was packed and they had to turn people away at the door. the first half was a bunch of nerds who had crawled out of their dark basements to brag about their awesome implimentations of freeBSD and Ruby on Rails that was oh so scalable […]
I’ll be giving a talk tonight at the Vancouver Facebook Developers Garage. Doors are at 5:30 at VFS (Hastings and Homer), get there early because it WILL be packed.

Directory Submissions are often seen as the cheap and easy links, usually a starter foundation to get a site noticed before some better link building work is done. I’ve seen brand new sites stop ranking for their own name after a few hundred directory submissions, even spread out with different titles and descriptions.
So what happens […]

SMM/SEO expertise fundamentally required.
Our Santa Monica based start-up is building a consumer destination site: aggregating and curating the best how-to videos from across the fragmented web. Opening Nov 1.
We need you to round out our management team and to help grow our site into a vibrant community for any human who is intellectually curious about watching anything how-to.
You will have 2 direct reports (whom you will hire) to help you. Your job will be to drive traffic (measured by uniques and registered users).
-Grassroots marketing. You must excel in non-paid marketing. Forging cross promotional campaigns. Establishing a true dialog with targeted community groups, blogs, and bulletin boards. Press. Alternative marketing. We will also develop online and onsite promotions with charismatic guest curators to drive traffic.
-SEO expertise a must.
You must have proven experience in the above. And you must be quantitatively analytical: you will be responsible for owning and monitoring all site metrics including traffic, membership, engagement and conversion rates. We are unlikely to pursue traditional media buys in print, tv, or radio.
We would like for you to have a bachelors degree: you do not have to have an MBA. You do need to have curiosity, ambition, and ability.
Location and Culture:
We are located in the heart of Santa Monica, in a single story building with a private wonder-garden: if you want fresh figs, pick them off our trees. While we are the chiefs, we are also the Indians. In prior lives, we have created ground breaking prime time shows, launched national networks, redesigned multiple international networks. We have deep experience in writing, directing, and producing video, and traditional marketing. We plan to focus our video chops towards a weekly V-log and towards fun, viral promotion. You are not expected to know this area, but we are eager to teach you what we know. With all that said, please keep in mind that you will be joining a team of product bigots: our product will always be our best promotion and marketing. And you must participate in improving the product.
(p.s. if you do not know what SMM is, then you probably should not apply.)
Full time. Stock options. Health care.

Superstar Database Architect
Be the creator of an app that even your non-techie friends will be raving about this time next year.
Stealth startup has a concept that is HIGHLY scalable/viral (10mm+ wwide users) and has been in the planning stages for years. The founder, Clark Benson, is a longtime internet vet (sold his company eCrush, at the end of last year to Hearst Digital Media) who is now ready to pursue this idea full throttle. We’ve scripted the concept out in detail. We now need a Database Architect/Potential CTO to start the process of bringing it to life, and build a team with us. We’re looking for serious brains and talent for be the first technical hire, with a few more key people to follow very quickly.
This is the rare opportunity to build an application that has a good chance to become an “internet household name”. You will understand after you hear about it (yes, you’ll have to sign an NDA). The idea is just … cool, yet very intuitive and user-friendly. While the concept involves social networking, it is NOT “a Myspace for ” or video-sharing startup #347. There is nothing like it out there. It will appeal to enthusiasts and passionate followers of any subject. If you don’t have any passionate interests or hobbies you are probably not the right person to help us maximize this idea.
This will not be a shoestring bootstrapped startup - we have $1mil in seed financing and access to plenty more. We will pay a healthy salary for this position, but frankly we’re looking for someone who “gets” the potential of the idea and is motivated more by a) the desire to create something truly unique and worthwhile and b) a solid chunk of early stage equity. In other words, don’t bother to respond if you are just looking for a slightly better job than what you’ve got. This is a startup and will involve startup hours and commitment. It’s not a “corporate” environment, and our plan is to keep it that way even as it grows. We really believe in this idea and are not thinking of it as a “quick flip” property while web 2.0 is hot; ideally we’d like to build a lasting entity.
We’re not hypey people, and apologize in advance for this “stealth-cryptic” post - we think the idea will speak for itself, but obviously can’t post it in public. We KNOW the opportunity is there, but we also know this will be a BEAST to program. Our lead technical hire will definitely have to be up to the challenge. If you are qualified and up for a serious challenge to throw yourself into, you should shoot us a resume. We’re looking for people who fit our vibe, as we’ll be spending a lot of time together. But we’re also looking for someone who is psyched about building an app that will touch the lives of millions of people.
We’re looking for really, really smart people, particularly for this position. We don’t want to specify “minimum 7 years experience in blah blah”. That said, this is not a gig for a novice - the more experience the better - if you’ve scaled a database-intensive site to 200K plus daily logins, built social networks, worked with APIs, taken a shot at improving the Netflix algorithm etc that is obviously all very positive. However, the single most important thing is that we find someone who is a creative problem solver, who is really smart, who has the confidence to be responsible for designing something big, and the maturity to know what he/she doesn’t know already and find the resources that he/she lacks and needs to get the job done. Tell us/show us what you’ve done - creating something impressive on your own from the ground up may be just as impressive to us as involvement in scaling high trafficked sites as part of a bigger team. Ideally the Database Architect is also a math/stats/algorithm wiz, but we’d also like to hear from you if you’re a math freak looking for a big challenge.
For backstory on Clark Benson, look at the eCrush case study at www.startup-review.com. Benson also owns a music marketing company at www.almightyretail.com.
